The first hurrah

After being called the Aggies for most of their early history, the university selected the Spartans nickname in 1925, and hasn't changed it since. However, the university's first official sports team, the football side, was formed quite a few years before that. When they played the Albion College in 1884, it was the first game played between two teams in the history of the state. Very soon they had added a basketball team and today the department has grown to include twenty five varsity sports.

Achievements and titles

The Spartans have won several major titles, including thirty national championships to date. They have enjoyed the most success in cross country, winning eight national titles. This is closely followed by football with six titles and then ice hockey with three. They have also won over a hundred and ten conference titles, with their ice hockey and outdoor track teams winning eighteen and twenty five titles respectively.
