Fela! Is a musical based on the life of the legendary Fela Anikulapo Kuti, the legendary Nigerian activist and music composer. This amazing musical has graced theaters in some of the biggest cities in the world and its latest stop is Washington DC. Fela! The musical comprises of the music and lyrics created by Fela and it debuted on Broadway in 2009. The play was immensely successful and received acclaim from the critics and fans alike. The story of the musical is about Fela and his criticism of the dictatorship ruling his country in the late 1970's. He releases an album titled 'Zombie';, an open criticism of the military regime which was ruling Nigeria at that time. The criticism isn't taken lying down by the rulers and they attack Fela's home, torturing him and his family. He follows it up with an open protest against the raid in 1979 where he again openly criticizes the military regime.
