Located about 7 miles from both the McCarran International Airport and UNLV Main Campus, and 8 miles from the Strip, the Sam Boyd Stadium was built in 1971 with $3.5 million. Back then it was named Las Vegas Stadium. However, over the next two decades, and after a couple of name changes (Las Vegas Silver Bowl, Sam Boyd Silver Bowl), the stadium finally came to be known as Sam Boyd Stadium in mid 1994.

Formerly it has also been the home turf of the Canadian Football League"s team Las Vegas Posse and Las Vegas Outlaws, the XFL team. On September 21, 2002 a crowd of 23,000 saw the first ever all black college game between Grambling St. & Tennessee St. at this stadium.

The stadium is built in the shape of a horse shoe and has an artificial turf surface since 2003. There is the official UNLV Football tailgate area, known as Rebel Experience that was opened outside the stadium in 1997. After undergoing a complete renovation in 1999 at a cost of 18 million, the Sam Boyd stadium became almost new.

The upgradation included new and extended concourse, upgraded concession stands, upgraded restrooms, and new press box, repaved parking lots including ADA access, a new playing surface and a new scoring system.

After this renovation project, Sam Boyd Stadium"s seating capacity that was around 30, 000 was increased to 36,800 which can be further increased up to 40,000 if needed. In 2005, when the football team from Brigham Young University came to play at the stadium, the crowd was counted at 44,615 - the largest crowd ever to watch a sports event for a team in Nevada"s history.

In 2001, when UNLV played Brigham Young at Sam Boyd Stadium in the Mountain West Conference football opener, new safety regulations were introduced. That was done after the terrorist attacks in USA. Among them were used metal-detecting hand-wands to search people before entering.

As the stadium is not covered, so visitors are advised to bring lots of water, a sun protection cream and a hat. Parking shouldn"t be a problem as there are three parking lots around the East, South & West of the building of the stadium. These are easily detectable because of their color designation and numbered sections.

Shuttle buses are also available from the strip and downtown Vegas. Visitors with disabilities need not worry as VIP parking spaces and disabled parking are also available in all the lots. One could also contact the External Coordinator for the arrangement of bus and limousine parking for any event need.

Usually but not always, the charges for most of the public events include $5.00/stall for Cars, $5.00/stall for RV (Recreational vehicle). One important rule that all the visitors must keep in mind is that due to security reasons some items are not allowed in the stadium such as but not limited to large bags, large backpacks, coolers, food and beverages, video cameras, noise makers, laser pens etc.

Overall the stadium is a great venue for going with friends and family and watching any sporting as well as entertainment events. Because of its location, the stadium is easily accessible.

Visitors can be at the event in 5 minutes, watch the event and then end their day with a nice dinner at a fancy restaurant on the Strip.
