The history of the Old Globe Theatre dates back to 1935, when it opened its doors with abridged versions of Shakespeare"s plays. On December 2, 1937, Old Globe presented John Van Druten"s The Distaff Side.

At that time, regular features at the facility were full-length Shakespeare"s plays, while a Summer Shakespeare Festival was launched in 1949. In 1969, it underwent renovations, adding a Cassius Carter Centre Stage.

In 1978, a disaster occurred, when the landmark Old Globe Theatre was destroyed by Arson Fire. It was shut down until 1982, when the facility reopened with a production of Shakespeare"s As You Like It.

Today, the Old Globe Theater annually produces 15 main-stage productions from all periods and styles. These may range from Shakespeare to the new works. Old Globe also hosts a family musical, Dr. Seuss" How The Grinch Stole Christmas! each year.

Besides presenting events, the facility has been home to the most acclaimed national artists, directors, playwrights and designers in the Theatre industry. Noteworthy is the fact that more than 250,000 people annually attend Globe productions and take part in various outreach services and education programs the theater offers them.

The Old Globe Theater is now called the Lowell Davies Festival Theatre, whereas the entire theatre complex is named the Simon Edison Centre for the Performing Arts.

The Old Globe Theatre"s critical acclaim increased when it hosted several world premieres, such as Into the Woods, Play On!, The Full Monty and Imaginary Friends. These premiers later went on to enjoy successful runs on Broadway.

The Old Globe Theatre is a leading arts employer in San Diego and among the United States" top-ranked regional theatre venues. Its current operating budget is approximately $20 million, and thus is one of San Diego"s largest arts institutions.

The facility puts up on stage a wide and spectacular array of productions each year. More than twenty productions produced at The Old Globe have appeared on to play on Broadway and off-Broadway. In 2000, the Theater"s production The Full Monty was nominated for 10 Tony Awards, while in 2005, Dirty Rotten Scoundrels garnered 11 Tony Award nominations for its successful Broadway run.

Artists performing at The Old Globe love the generosity of the theatre"s fluid design, perfect sight-lines, and great acoustics. In 2003, Globe Artistic Director Jack O"Brien received a Tony Award for his direction of the musical Hairspray.

The following year, he walked away with another Tony Award for his direction of Henry IV at Lincoln Center. The nominations and awards garnered world-wide attention not only to The Old Globe Theatre but also to San Diego"s rich cultural scene.
