The Lanxess Arena which was formerly known at the Kolnarena which was a German word which meant Cologne Arena is a beautiful indoor arena. This fantastic arena is located in Cologne in North Rhine Westphalia in Germany. The arena was inaugurated in 1998 and the seating capacity of the arena is 20,000. The arena was basically used by Kolner Haie (ice hockey) and for VFL Gummersbach (team handball) and also used as a venue for hosting musical concerts.
The famous singer from the United States of America, Janet Jackson was going to perform at the Lanxess Arena, while she was touring her All for You Tour on the 19th of November in 2001. Unfortunately this concert was cancelled due to the 11th September, 2001 attacks in the United States of America. The World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) events take place on a regular schedule at this amazing arena. The World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) has hosted events at this arena in 2006, 2002, and 2007 and also in 2003. This beautiful arena was also utilized for the 2007 World Men’s Handball Championship. The final and the third place game were also held at this arena.
On the 2nd of June in 2008, it was made official in an announcement that the Kolnarena will be given a new name called the Lanxess Arena and for the next ten years there would be no change of name of the arena. The arena has hosted many entertaining concerts as well as sporting championships. The famous band for the United States of America by the name of Nickleback performed their very first show called the “warm up show” for the tour called Dark Horse Tour on the 8th of September in 2008 at the arena. On the 13th of June in 2009, the Ultimate Fighting Championships hosted the UFC 99 at this fantastic arena. It was the first time that the UFC had come to Germany. On 24th of September in 2010, Sting gave a remarkable performance along with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra at the arena. On the 18th of October in 2011, Britney Spears performed at the arena while she toured globally for her Femme Fatale Tour.
From 1998 till 2008 the Lanxess Arena was named the Kolarena. The ground breaking ceremony of the arena took place on the 31st of July in 1996 and was inaugurated on the 17th of October in 1998. The owners of the arena are Mantlebebauung GbR and the Immobilienfonds Kolen-Deutz Arena. The construction cost of this magnificent arena was € 153 million. The architect of the arena is Peter Bohm. The total seating capacity for concerts at the arena is 20,000, for ice hockey it is 18,500 and for handball it is 19,500.
