Music and Austin
As Austin's official slogan is The Live Music Capital of the World, the city has a vibrant live music scene with more music venues per capita than any other U.S. city. Austin's music revolves around the many nightclubs on 6th Street and an annual film/music/interactive festival known as South by Southwest.
Inside La Zona Roza
La Zona Rosa is a wonderful little venue, with a completely DIY-atmosphere in an abandoned warehouse meets your parents garage type of feel. 1990s do not set up the stage in the way a traditional 3-piece band does. Lead singer, Jackie McKeown and replacement bassist Dino Bardot are separated by drummer, Michael McGaughrin, whose drum kit is moved up all the way to the front of the stage.
90s and the Club
In 1990s, the club saw DIY on the top of the list. They started off with "Switch", and during the song, the room filled up, more so than the 25 people they played to in Dallas the night before. Next was "You Made Me Like It", bringing the crowd into the set, again more so than the previous night.
Famous Performances
With its history of openings and closings, La Zona Rosa has long been thought of as perfect for yet another reinvention. Among the players whose names had come up in connection with such a scheme were Tim O'Connor's Direct Events, the House of Blues club chain, and Liberty Lunch co-owner Mark Pratz. Pratz especially had good reason to hope to get the position.
The Management
It's long been speculated that the Lunch, whose long history of near-closings makes La Zona seem solid as a Swiss bank, could be the big loser if a new city hall lands on the spot of his club or Direct Events lands a third venue.
Finally, ' O'Connor and Charlie Jones, and Waterloo Ice House's Ted Karam reached an agreement with La Zona Rosa's most recent owner, Kelly Gruber, for the three to take over management control of the venue.
Conclusion
La Zona Rosa will have to fight for and win the services of the louder, alternative acts that are currently the Lunch's bread and butter.
Pratz wonders aloud how the DE gang would succeed in incorporating such bands into La Zona Rosa's traditionally quieter, older audience-oriented repertoire.
He suggests that such a mix could turn off people who think of the club as a "place to hang" where they can expect music that generally fits their interests there on any given night.
