Koko
Koko, formerly known as "The Camden Palace', is a major dance and rock venue located on 1 A Camden High Street near Mornington Crescent tube station in Camden Town; famous for its crowded markets, liberal attitude and associations with popular culture, London.

Koko has undergone many changes of name and venue type being a theater, cinema and studio. It was born as the Camden Theatre opened by the famous actress Ellen Terry in 1900.

Initially it had the seating capacity of 1600 patrons. In 1909 the theatre was renamed The Camden Hippodrome and was a variety theatre where famous names such as Charlie Chaplin appeared.

In 1911 film seasons began and it became a proper cinema in 1913 operated by Biocolour Picture Theatres Ltd which was later taken over by the Gaumont British cinema circuit. In 1928 live acts like "Novelty Nights" became part of the venue. In 1945 the building became home of BBC Theatre and hosted shows that included the famous Goon Show.

In 1972 The BBC moved to the Golders Green Hippodrome and Koko became a live music venue known by the visitors of that time as "The Music Machine" and provided a platform for the first wave punk bands such as The Sex Pistols and The Clash.

Later in 1982 it became the Camden Palace that hosted the first UK performance by a rising star known as Madonna, the earliest gigs of the Eurythmics and the performance of Madness - Nutty boys of Camden Town. In 2004 it was redeveloped and renamed once again as Koko.

The previous industrial fittings of the Camden Palace were removed and it was repainted in a dark red colour and fitted with brand new sound equipment with a capacity of 1,410 patrons.

It is owned by The Mint Group and it was designed by the prolific theatre architect W.G.R. Sprague with an exterior symmetrical stone façade in a Classical style with four stone pillars that are spaced between windows.

Koko has been a home for the performances of artists like Coldplay, Prince, The Kaiser Chiefs, Polyphonic_spree, My Chemical Romance, Paradise Lost, Miley Cyrus and Babyshambles. It also hosts regular weekly club nights.

The video for the Placebo's "Because I Want You" single was shot at Koko. In March 2007 Hannah Montana performed a concert here that was broadcasted globally on Disney Channel under the title "Hannah Montana: Live in London".

On April 2, 2007 The American Rock band My Chemical Romance played an exclusive private gig at this venue which was hosted by Radio 1. The Channel 4 program "The Album Chart Show" was also recorded at Koko.

Koko has also been voted the UK's Best Live Entertainment Venue in the BEDA 2005 awards. It has also hosted successful corporate events that include companies like Orange, Cosmopolitan magazine and Puma.

Koko represents a versatile, state of the art venue, adaptable for multiple uses from intimate events to international awards and from rock concerts to Seminars. Koko is an arena that brings life to the Camedon Town.
