When George Gershwin was composing songs for Broadway productions in the 1920"s and 1930"s along with his lyricist brother Ira Gershwin; he would have never imagined that a Broadway theatre will be named after him. However, a theatre was constructed in New York thirty-five years after his death that would later be known as the Gershwin Theatre in the honor of this great American composer.

Opened on November 28, 1972 as a Uris Theatre, Gershwin Theatre New York became the first legitimate theatre built on Broadway since 1928. Famous set designer Ralph Alswang designed it in Art Nouveau style.

The first production that appeared on Gershwin Theatres" stage was Via Galactica starring Raul Julia. A huge sum of money was spent on the construction of this theatre. However, it failed to gain the expected attention at first place and got closed after seven performances.

Since musicals did not garnered required results at Uris, the theatre started accommodating concerts and music performances. From 1974 to 1976, it played host to the legends of pop and jazz music. However, it"s rechristening as Gershwin Theatre on June 5, 1983 during the Tony Awards ceremony opened a new chapter full of success and applause.

The venue has never looked back since then and hosted several big productions and entertaining musicals. Today, it is considered as a booming venue among the Nederlander Organization's nine Broadway theatres and attracts millions of patrons every year.

The decade of 1990 made Gershwin the most preferred theatre of New York to watch musicals. Be it Meet Me in St. Louis, Fiddler on the Roof or Moscow Circus, the theatre has showcased many colorful presentations during those times.

More recently, it has hosted hits like Riverdance on Broadway and Oklahoma!, however it was the 2003 entry of Wicked that made Gershwin Theatre the most happening Broadway theatre of the city.
