Boston’s beloved The Colonial Theater is located in Boston, Massachusetts, and offers more history than any in the city. The Colonial Theatre is part of Boston’s Theater District, built on Tremont and Boylston streets, 106 Boylston St., Boston.

The Colonial Theatre is a richly rococo Victorian-era playhouse, but still offers plenty of modern conveniences to visitors.
The three-level theatre with mirror-lined foyers was designed by Clarence Blackall whereas Herman Schadlermundt painted the venue’s extensive ceiling frescos. With period wallpaper, painted ceiling and gold leaves everywhere, the venue is lovely inside.
The Colonial has been a favorite touring house for many decades and is ideal for both musical and dramatic productions. It continues to feature large scale musicals in Boston’s most ornate setting.
People often regard it as a treasure for Boston; it is small and quaint and what true theatre going is all about. The ornate architecture and interior are amazing; visitors can spend a good time looking up at the ceiling and walls.
With the Wang and Opera House, the Colonial Theatre definitely rounds out the trifeca for beautiful venues in Boston. The Colonial has also hosted much larger shows such as Les Miserables.
However, after the renovation of the newly restored Opera House, some of its usuals were taken away. Nonetheless, the Venue continues to be a testing ground for Broadway-bound shows.
It has recently played host to a revival of the classic musical Brigadoon and a brand new musical called Nice Work If You Can Get It. The show would feature the songs of George and Ira Gershwin, also starring Harry Connick Jr.. They had their world premiers at the Colonial before moving to the Great White Way.
Some of the notable shows previewed at the Colonial before opening on Broadway include Anything Goes, Red, Hot and Blue, Porgy and Bess, The Merchant of Yonkers, Born Yesterday, Carousel, Annie Get Your Gun, La Cage aux Folles, Grand Hotel, Follies, Beatlemania (musical), A Little Night Music, The Diary of Anne Frank, Seussical The Musical, Tallulah and High Fidelity.
At present, the Venue continues to house Broadway and Pre-Broadway shows. Because of its size, the venue can often host highly technical musicals that other smaller houses are unable to put on.
The Colonial Theatre also offers various Special Needs services for patrons. The services mainly include Wheelchair Seating, Infrared Assisted Listening, Open Captioned Performances and Audio Desription.
Scheduled at theatre is the forth-coming show called Broadway Across America- Boston Special Needs Performances for the upcoming 2008-09 Season.
It’ll be featured with Audio Described and Open Captioned performances; Open Captioned Performances for patrons who are deaf or hard-of-hearing, an electronic text display will be placed to the side of the stage showing what the performers are saying and/or singing while also describing any sound effects on stage and Audio Described Performances for patrons who are visually impaired, also providing a specially trained describer to narrate what is happening on stage during pauses in dialogue.
