Currently it can capacitate 75,000 people at a time with the state of the art facilities and environment to watch a race. Also the cornfields surrounding the race track provides a picturesque background.
The Chicagoland Speedway has become a major and significant draw of attention for events of NASCAR and IRL, since its inauguration in 2001, sometimes even selling out for races for months in advance, the beginning of a new era in racing.
The build of The Chicagoland Speedway lies adjacent to the older Route 66 Raceway. This idea was developed after discussions of the president of NASCAR and the Indy Racing League Finder and after several years of searching of sites.
The Speedway resembles 1.5 miles down force racetrack like many other racetracks that have a resemblance with the D-shape in the NASCAR racing series. Due to this fact, the Speedway is called one of the NASCAR"s "cookie cutter". Chicagoland is unique in a way that it has a continuous curve with a bend in the backstretch.
The events hosted in Chicagoland include Indycar Series, peak antifreeze Indy 300 and a newly added NASCAR Truck Series race in August. And once in a year it hosts NASCAR Sprint Cup series and nationwide series in July.
The inaugural events of Chicagoland was hosted in 2001 with the initial schedule including NASCAR"s Busch, Winston Cup, IRL Indy Car Series and AREA RE/MAX Series with these series running through 2008.
An enormous crash happened at the Chicagoland on September 11, 2005 which involved Ryan Briscoe"s breaking both his clavicles. On November 14, 2004, Ryan returned to USA, recovered from his injuries.
On September 25, 2007, lights were installed on the announcement of officials for the 2008 racing season. The Speedway then became able to hold night racing because of this addition to the 1.5 miles D-shaped Speedway. In 2008, two night races will be held in Chicagoland Speedway.
Another credit of Chicagoland Speedway is making its way into Guinness World Records when Logan Gomez won his first career race by only three inches from that year"s champion Alex Lloyd. This was recorded as the closest finish in professional motor racing history.
The very first night race at Chicagoland Speedway was held on July 11th, 2008, the Nationwide Series" Dollar General Race and that was won by Kyle Busch.
He won another night race, the next day in Lifelock.com 400. The announcement was made in 2008 that the NASCAR Truck Series will be held in 2009 paired with Indycar Series race.
The current races at the Chicagoland Speedway include NASCAR Sprint Cup Series, NASCAR Nationwide Series, NASCAR Camping World Truck Series, IRL IndyCar Series and IRL Firestone Indy Lights.
