Located in Gainesville, Florida, Ben Hill Griffin Stadium is a home of the University of Florida"s football team. Ben Hill Griffin Stadium is the 12th largest college football stadium by capacity. It draws over 90,000 fans per game. In recent years, the American football Stadium has moved into the national spotlight as one of collegiate football"s best stadiums, from a player and fan standpoint.
The history of Ben Hill Griffin Stadium dates back to 1930, when it was built as "Florida Field". Built in a shallow ravine, the Field could seat about 22,000. Over 11,000 seats were added on the west side and another 7,000 were provided by bleachers on the east side in 1950s.
Over the years, Florida Field, now called Ben Hill Griffin Stadium, has undergone many renovations. The additions brought seating capacity to 46,164 by 1960. With the enclosure of the south endzone, and north endzone of Ben Hill Griffin Stadium in 1982 and 1991 respectively, and expanded club seats and luxury boxes in 2003, the Venue has turned into the largest sports facility on the State of Florida.
Raising seating capacity to 82,000, the north endzone caused the horseshoe to turn into a bowl. Currently the official capacity can accommodate a crowd of over 88,000, though the actual average attendance has been over 90,000.
The year 1995 marked the 66th year that Ben Hill Griffin Stadium, formerly Florida Field, is the home of the Gators. The Florida Gator football team has played all of their home games on Florida Field since 1930; the annual contest against the Georgia Bulldogs that has been played at the place since 1930s is the most notable example.
Prior to the 1989 season, Florida Field was renamed Ben Hill Griffin Stadium at Florida Field in honor of Ben Hill Griffin Jr. Ben Hill Jr. has been a life-long Florida Gator football team"s supporter and fan. He has also been extremely benevolent and generous to several sectors at the University of Florida. Ben passed away in March of 1990.
In addition to hold football matches, the Ben Hill Griffin Stadium also plays host to Gator Growl. Gator Growl is the largest student-run pep rally in the world, providing an opportunity to students and alumni to gather together for a night of cheers, skits and top-notch comedians.
A few of the comedians who have performed at Gator Growl include Robin Williams, Bill Cosby, Bob Hope, Jerry Seinfield and Rodney Dangerfield.
On football Saturdays, the state-of-the-art facility is the place to be while it is also widely recognized as one of the toughest environments for a visiting team in all of college football. The Stadium is also the site for high school state championship games that are held each December.
