The dynamic duo of Jon Anderson (vocalist) and Chris Squire (bassist) formed the English group 'Yes' in London in 1968. Anderson had been playing in The Warriors before forming Yes, and had also recorded a single. That was a beat band group formed in 1964 by Anderson's brother Tony. After this, Anderson sang a few songs using the pseudonym Hans Christian apart from a short stay with the group The Gun. His partner Squire also had moved around like being a member of The Syn, the group that did a couple of singles for Deram Records. When The Syn died out, Squire invested time and energy in polishing his bass-playing skills, while keeping John Entwistle his role model who was the The Who's bassist. Anderson and Squire met each other in a nightclub where Anderson was employed. Their interests harmonized with each other compelling them to form a team.

Yes thrives on progressive rock tunes and their music is based on vibrant tunes gelled with extra long songs and beautiful instrumental pull. They captivate the audience by blending symphonic melodies with their own style of music. In spite of rifts within the group, changes in the roles of the members and the persisting challenges of new trends, the band has managed to persist in the scene for more than forty years with a large fan base still around. Their first stage appearance was at East Mersea Youth Camp on August 4, 1968. The group became known for converting other people's songs into altogether different extended symphonies. Their first debut on radio was on John Peel's program where columnist Tony Wilson voted Yes and Led Zeppelin as the two bands most likely to be successful.

Anderson and Squire were a hit with the audience due to their unique coherence of vocals. Yes launched their first album in the market in 1969. Then, the band's album Survival took on the listeners with great zest and it earned a very positive review in Roller Stone magazine calling the band as promising. The band's second album was released in 1970 which was well-orchestrated. The 1970s songs by Yes still manage to inspire many fans. The wordings in these songs have an unusual dramatic appeal with the length being often as much as twenty minutes.

Yes held its show in Paris in October 1979. Disputes started occurring within the group then. In 1980, Anderson left the group due to conflicts over musical direction and financial remuneration. The present team comprises Chris Squire, Trevor Rabin and Alan White who got together on 18 April 2009 in Washington, playing the music of John Lennon.
