Mathews tried his hand at writing lyrics after the unfortunate and untimely death of his father in 1977. The whole incident inspired the lyrics of 'carpe diem'. In 1986, he moved to Virginia. It was the little town of Charlottesville which saw the beginning of the rise of this star. Even though he was playing guitar since the age of 9, he had never performed publically before he came to Charlottesville. In new time he was one of the best musicians in the local community. Enthused by his initial success, he also tried his luck at acting where he stared in many local productions. This exposure ultimately led him to his future friends and collaborators.
Dave Mathews band has received several nominations for their outstanding contribution to music. So far, they have been nominated thrice in Favorite Pop category of American Music Awards. Grammy Award seems to have a thing for the band as they have received a mind boggling 14 nominations. But unfortunately, they managed to win only one for their song So Much To Say in 1997. VH1 also deems their contribution to music highly valuable and have awarded them a total of 4 awards in various categories. In 2004, the band won NAACP Image Award as well.
