The Avett Brothers is a phenomenal folk rock band from Concrod, in North Carolina. It is composed of banjo player Scott Avett, guitarist Seth Avett, bassist Bob Crawford, cellist Joe Kwon and drummer Jacob Edwards. The Avett Brothers began with the musical relationship of the brothers Seth and Scott, who had been playing music since childhood. The two began playing properly when their bands formed together in the nineties to create Nemo. At the time Scott was in college and Seth was in high school. With Nemo, the two brothers released three albums and soon after introduced a more acoustic sound, forming Nemo Downstairs together with guitarist John Twomey.
This later turned into The Avett Brothers, with bassist John Crawford. In 2002, their first album was released, followed by a tour to promote the album. The band’s next album was a live album, of their tour, after which they met in studio to start work on their next album. In 2003, they released their second studio album, A Carolina Jubilee, their first on Ramseur Records. In 2004, they released another album, labeled Mignonette, followed by 2005’s Live, Vol. 2.
In 2006, The Avett Brothers released Four Thieves Gone: The Robbinsville Session, to much critical and commercial acclaim. An EP, from the recording sessions of this album, was also released. Their 2007 album, Emotionalism, ranked at the top of the Billboard Heatseekers Albums Chart, as well as on the Billboard 200 and the Independent Artists Chart. They appeared on the Late Night with Conan O’Brien show and also received the American Music Association’s Awards for the New Emerging Artist of the Year and the Duo Group of the Year. In 2008, they released another EP.
In 2009, they were dubbed the Artist to Watch by Rolling Stone magazine. Their next album ranked sixteenth on the Billboard 200 chart, eighth on the Best Selling Digital Albums, seventh on the rock albums chart and first on the Folk Albums chart. It was followed by appearances on shows such as the Late Night with Jimmy Fallon, the Late Show with David Letterman, the Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson and were featured on Austin City Limits. In 2011, they performed at the Grammy Awards, alone and then with Bob Dylan and Mumford & Sons. Their 2012 album debuted fourth on the Billboard 200, a feat worthy of seeing them live in concert via The Avett Brothers tickets.
