44 years in the music industry and their popularity hasn't diminished. America continues to rule the hearts of millions with their astounding folk rock and soft rock melodies. Rising in the 70s, the band was formed by Gerry Beckley, Dewey Bunnell and Dan Peek. Pioneer of contemporary Christian music, Peek passed away in 2011, leaving behind a music legacy. Beckley and Bunnell continue to record music and perform live in more than 100 shows a year. With their fathers serving American Air Force and residing in England's base, the trio met in high school that was specifically set up for such families. Patriotic pride mixed with homesickness prompted the band's name as they wanted to separate themselves from other groups performing at that time in the area. As America they performed in local clubs and it was during these gigs that the trio was discovered by the DJ Jeff Dexter. His interest in them earned the band a deal with Warner Bros. and the rest as they say is history.
America came up with their self-titled record in 1971, which was re-released a year later with the hit song “A Horse with No Name”. A folk-pop classic, the album produced many popular tracks and displayed an intricate airplay of acoustic guitar. With three incredible musicians in the lineup who could sing a variety of styles, from authentic folk to Beatles balladry to California pop, America dominated the music scene for half a decade. In the 80s, America signed with Capitol Records and continued with their evolution as great singers and songwriters. It was during this time that Dan Peek left the band and embarked on a solo career to compose contemporary Christian music. Experiencing a setback, the duo, Beckley and Bunnell were quick to pull up themselves and came up with the hit album “View from the Ground”. It produced acclaimed numbers like “You Can Do Magic” and “Right Before Your Eyes”.
In 1984, America released their twelfth album titled “Perspective”. The album marked their comeback on the music charts and featured the producers, Richie Zito, Matthew McCauley and Richard James Burgess. America finally made the much needed transition into the 80s' style music and incorporated synthesizers in their tracks. “Special Love” is a popular single from this album. Following this, the members got involved in solo projects but still continued to perform live, treating fans to massive concerts. After releasing a series of live albums, in 1994, America finally came up with their thirteenth record “Hourglass”. Well produced, it included fresh and standout numbers like “Young Moon”, “Close to the Wind” and “Hope”.
“Human Nature” followed in 1998 and was released with Oxygen Records. 2002 saw the release of America's first Christmas album “Holiday Harmony” that included catchy tracks such as Winter Wonderland and A Christmas To Remember. “Here & Now” hit the shelves in 2007 and has been called a comeback album for the band. Produced by Adam Schlesinger and James Iha, it is a remarkable effort that fuses indie rock with hip-hop. Smooth melodies and sweet harmonies have made it a hit album with popular singles like Always Love, Here and Now, Sister Golden Hair and Indian Summer. Their latest release is “Cover Pages” that came out in 2011 and is a compilation of cover songs.
America has been touring extensively and in 2014 alone has performed in multiple cities and arenas.
