Memphis is David Bryan’s musical. The lyrics and music for the show are composed by Bryan himself while Joe DiPietro co-wrote the lyrics and the book. The story revolves around the DJ Dewey Philips, who was the very first disk jockey belonging to the 50s to have played black music. The original concept for the musical was presented by George W. George, a theatre producer. Several productions of the musical were staged, first at North Shore Music Theatre in Massachusetts. From there, it was taken to California and then to Seattle in February of 2009.
In September of 2009, Memphis the musical’s Broadway production was ready to be staged. Under the direction of Christopher Ashley and choreography of Sergio Trujillo, the production opened at Shubert Theatre. Many of the actors from pre-Broadway productions were included in this version. The musical was an instant success and won a Tony Award for “Best Musical” in 2010. It ran 1,166 performances before closing down in August of 2012.
Memphis the musical’s very first US tour began in October of 2011 at Memphis’ Orpheum Theatre. The touring production currently travels all around the United States, witnessing sold out theatres.
