Off Broadway Shows

Over the past few years, both, the quality and the quantity of Off Broadway Shows has enhanced a lot, and it has now become a significant part of the New York theatre season. Off-Broadway grants an opportunity for fans to see several adaptations, new plays, and revivals which are otherwise not possible. Since they are small budget productions, Off Broadway Shows also encourage experimental theatre, which their glitzier cousin, Broadway (being highly financed productions) hardly ever allows.

Off Broadway Theater is basically an umbrella term used for a distinct set of musicals, plays, or revues that are performed in New York City, U.S. The name "Off Broadway" refers to the venue situated and its productions on a street that crosses Broadway in Manhattan's Theatre District, and later turned out to be certified venue in New York City, having a seating capacity ranging between 99 and 500, or as a particular production that appears in such a venue adhering to related trade union and other contracts under the League of Off-Broadway Theatres and Producers. Thus, Off Broadway Shows refer to professional New York shows which are performed outside the principal theater district, known as Broadway. These productions are occasionally experimental or often innovative in nature.

Off Broadway shows are not entitled for Tony Awards, but for the New York Drama Critics ' Circle Award. The only exception made to this rule was made during 1956, when Lotte Lenya won a Tony for the best actress for one of the Off Broadway show called The Threepenny Opera. Many of the Off Broadway Shows have had successive runs on Broadway, including musicals such as Rock of Ages, A Chorus Line, Avenue Q, Hair, In the Heights, Rent, and Spring Awakening along with several other musicals, plays and productions. The theatre history’s longest running musical, known as The Fantasticks, spent its initial 42 year run at the Off Broadway.

Off Broadway Shows are also known as a paler version of their rich and colorful cousin, Broadway. However, the history of Off Broadway shows is equally as multicolored as the productions for which the area has become prominent for. Initially, the Off Broadway movement took shape as a response to Broadway commercialism, in the late 1940s. The primary goal of this movement was to offer a channel innovative and experimental works, free from profit-making apprehensions. Off Broadway was committed to launch new playwrights, along with stimulating important plays that had originally failed on Broadway.

Due to the Off Broadway movement, the world got introduced to new directors, designers and actors. The performers who made their debuts Off Broadway included, Colleen Dewhurst, Jason Robards, Dustin Hoffman, and Al Pacino. Today, all these are known as noteworthy professionals.

In the 19th and the early 20th century, the Off Broadway scene of New York included vaudeville acts, burlesque shows, and theaters that hosted tours of Broadway shows. It was uncommon for an original Off Broadway show to gain attention and popularity, ultimately being staged at Broadway. However, in 1921, it did happen, when an African-American revue, Shuffle Along, set out from Off Broadway to premiere at the 63rd Street Music Hall (one of the Broadway theaters), with great success. Due to the gained popularity, soon Off Broadway theaters mushroomed, shifting their production focus. During the early 19th century, Off Broadway theater groups started occupying downtown storefronts and other available small places, however, focusing on experimental pieces and dramas, which were opposing to musicals. Musicals became a part of the Off Broadway scene only a few decades back.

Then, during the 60s and 70s, Off Broadway also became more commercial and therefore, less experimental. More conventional productions started being staged with the rising production costs. In the past few decades, a lot of Off Broadway productions, including the very popular musical - Grccsc, have moved to Broadway, representing that the difference between the two entertainment avenues has paled.
