College Football is one of the most dominant sports traditions of today. In America, this sport is followed by millions of fans and thousands of people are related to this industry. Sometimes referred to as all-American past-time, college football got widespread recognition many years ago. The sport traces its roots from rugby that was very popular in England in the early 1800's. However, there is a huge difference between the rules and method of these two games.
The first documented intercollegiate football game was played in New Brunswick, New Jersey on November 6, 1869. Princeton and Rutgers Universities faced each other in the game that featured no referee or sports official and 25 players on each side if a huge field. This no-referee tradition continued until 1876 when the rules started to change gradually.
Over the course of next few years, college football adopted new changes and norms. An egg-shaped leather ball took the place of round ball; number of players was reduced to 15 so as the size of the field; players started wearing helmets; and referees became an indispensible part of the game in order to avoid brawls and cheats.
By 1870s, football teams from many colleges and universities were actively involved in the sport; each following different rules and regulations. This resulted in the formation of Intercollegiate Football Association that formalized the set of rules for this sport. Initiated by Universities of Harvard and Yale, the rules set by this organization were soon adopted by all the major college football teams.
One of the major contributors to college football is Walter Camp. This player from Yale University worked closely with Intercollegiate Football Association to upgrade the pattern of the game. He established base for modern day college football back in 1880. Despite his continuous efforts, the sport witnessed reluctant support because of the deaths and injuries occurred to football players during the games.
With the formation of NCAA or National Collegiate Athletic Association, the 'unsafe' tag was permanently removed from the face of college football. What started as a seven-member Rules Committee decided by 60 plus schools became the parent organization for college football all over America. The game itself rose to great heights and the play of young and fresh talent soon won the hearts of football lovers.
Today, College football is celebrated all over United States not only for the excitement and thrill, but for the tradition and history it holds. As a symbol of American athletics, the sport is played in hundreds of colleges and universities playing in different leagues of NCAA. Hardly any mainstream school is missing on a football team of its own.
NCAA categorizes the College football teams into divisions and conferences on the basis of location, size and other specifications. They encounter each other in different championships throughout the year. NCAA holds Division I (FCS), Division II and Division III. The FCS is the highest division to hold a playoff tournament to determine the champion.
The phenomenon of College football is incomplete without mentioning BCS or Bowl Championship Series. The top two college football teams are pitted against each other in this championship and the winner is declared a national champion. NCAA does not hold a tournament for this form but still teams from Division I FBS participate in this format and the Bowl Games it hosts.
