The history of College Basketball is the history of basketball itself; however, it is commonly referred to as the American basketball competitive governance body structure which was devised by the National Collegiate Athletic Association. To-date, the College basketball has produced many great players, incredible plays and unforgettable moments. Each year, new NCAA basketball teams rise on scene and break to popularity. Indeed there is nothing like seeing how your favorite basketball team grows over the season and catching them in action!

The game of College Basketball was introduced by Dr James Naismith in 1892. The original Basketball Team bore little or no resemblance to today's college basketball which is based on Naismith's 13 rules. In the beginning, each team would comprise seven to nine players, while players were disqualified only after two fouls. It wasn't until January 18, 1896, when first basketball game was played following the current five-man format in Iowa City. The game held between the University of Chicago and the University of Iowa. The University of Iowa lost to the Chicagoans 15 - 12. With this, the game developed and its popularity expanded simultaneously.

By the end of twentieth century, Basketball had grown to university level and the Conferences began to form College Basketball teams. Realizing the growing popularity of Basketball, the Intercollegiate Athletic Association of the United States was created in 1906. The organization aimed to formulate the rules of eligibility for collegiate athletics. Right after four years of its inception, the IAAS changed its name to the NCAA - the National Collegiate Athletic Association. Not until 1939, the NCAA featured a tournament of its own. In the beginning, the tournament started off with eight teams which eventually grew to 65 teams.

The NCAA Tournament Champions Trophy gained popularity and became a dream for basketball players and feast for basketball fanatics. Today, there are a number of Men's College Basketball Teams that look sharp, but North Carolina is on the top of Basketball Team Ratings being the 2009 NCAA Champions.
