Odette is a princess who has been turned in to a swan by the evil Von Rothbart along with other girls. Odette remains a swan all day and swims in a lake near the castle and can only turn in to human at night. She can turn in to a human for ever if a man can prove true love to her and if he can not, Odette will remain a swan forever. Prince Siegfried sees Odette one day transforming in to human and he is startled by her beauty and falls in love with her. Hen Odette tells him her story; the prince promises to be true to her forever and asks Odette to come at the ball and dance with her so that he can choose her to be his wife which he is required to do. But the evil Von Rothbart transforms his daughter Odile in to a girl resembling Odette and takes her to ball. He wants the prince to break his vow of true love to Odette so that Odette can be in his captivation forever and his plan succeeds when the prince, thinking Odile as Odette, reveals his love for her. Siegfried sees a swan at the window and follows her. He later realizes his mistake and is sorry for that. Odette forgives him but tells him that she is now in the power of Rothbart forever. Odette attempts to die and Siegfried vows to die with her. In the climax of the story, Rothbart is deprived of all his powers, the enchantment ends and Odette and Siegfried descend to heaven to be together for eternity.

The ballet master for the show was Julius Reisinger and conductor was Stepan Ryabov. At first the Swan Lake received loads of negative criticism but today it is known as one of the most valuable works of Tchaikovsky.
