Nick Swardson is most notable for his role as Terry Bernadino in Reno 911! which was a hit comedy series. Furthermore, his work with Happy Madison Productions in collaboration with Adam Sandler has been highly praised. Swardson's own sketch comedy show, Nick Swardson's Pretend Time, has received immense critical acclaim.

He was only eighteen years old when he began performing on the stage. He used to regularly attend open mic nights at the Acme Comedy Co., which is a comedy club in Minneapolis. In an interview in 2007 with The Portland Mercury, Swardson quoted that he performed "as a goof." However, he found tremendous support from the owner of the club and carried on performing. Later, he went on to win the "Funniest Person in the Twin Cities," award by the club. Soon after, he was seen performing as a regular guest at the Knuckleheads, which is also a comedy club in the Mall of America.

After having caught the eyes of various people in comedy circles, Nick Swardson, at twenty, was chosen to perform at the U.S. Comedy Arts Festival. This festival was annually held and was attended by insiders from the entertainment industry. It was also an avenue for talented comedians to gain exposure.

Ultimately, he left Minneapolis for New York City. In New York he appeared in several live shows in venues like the popular Luna Lounge. He later went to Los Angeles, where Swardson got the opportunity to headline various shows in many nightclubs.

Apart from doing standup comedy, he also began venturing into television commercials that led him into getting roles in both television and movies. In 1999, he appeared in the Al Franken show, LateLine. Finally in 2000, he was cast as a crazed David Bowie fan in the blockbuster movie, Almost Famous.

In 2001, he got his major break when he was featured in a half-hour special of Comedy Central Presents. It seemed as though there was no stopping Swardson in achieving great heights of fame. He came on the show again in 2006 and a DVD compilation of it was made that was called The Best of Comedy Central Presents: Uncensored II.

Nick Swardson landed various roles and continued doing them till he got his own show on Comedy Central. The series, Nick Swardson's Pretend Time first aired on the 12^th of October, 2010. The show ran for two seasons garnering him an immense fan following. The show was produced by Adam Sandler's Happy Madison Productions.

In 2011, Swardson not only starred in, but also co-produced and co-wrote the movie Bucky Larson: Born to Be a Star. This movie was also produced by Happy Madison Productions. The same year, he starred in another movie, 30 Minutes or Less, along with actors like Aziz Ansari, Danny McBride and Jesse Eisenberg. In 2014, he performed the voice of the Troy in the animated show, Chozen.
