The musical’s story lies in what is a Middle Eastern folk tale and one found in the famous The Book of One Thousand and One Nights, known also as The Arabian Nights. It was added to the collection by Antoine Galland in the eighteenth century. As a musical, the story has been produced a number of times. In 1906, an Edwardian musical comedy was staged and labeled The New Aladdin. It had also inspired many classical pieces of music by Ferrucio Busoni with Adam Oehlenschlager writing a verse drama on it, with music by Carl Nielsen.

In 1958, the first proper musical comedy was released, mainly for US TV channels. Its book was written by S.J. Perelman with Cole Porter responsible for the lyrics and music. In 1959, a stage production was brought to life in London at the Coliseum Theatre with Bob Monkhouse playing the main role.

The original Disney animated movie, on which this musical is based, was directed by Ron Clements and John Musker. It was and still remains an international sensation. This musical fantasy comedy movie by Walt Disney was the thirty first classic film released by the company. It was released for public consumption in 1992, becoming the most successful movie of the year. It earned two hundred and seventeen million dollars that year and five hundred million plus worldwide. It won the Academy Awards for the Best Music, Original Song and Best Music, Original Score. It received Academy Award nominations in the Best Song, Best Sound Editing and Best Sound categories. It won the Best Original Song and Best Original Score at the Golden Globes, as well as the Golden Globe Special Achievement Award given to Robin Williams.
