The Houston Astros were established in 1962 and were first named the Colt .45s. The name was eventually changed to the Astros in 1965, when they moved to their new stadium, the Astrodome. The name was based on Houston's famous association with the national space program. It took them ten years to post their first winning season and their first title came in 1980 when they came first in their division. They went on to win two more west division titles before joining the central division where they won four titles. They got two wild card berths in 2004 and 2005, and managed to win the division series the first year. The second time they won the division series again and went on to win the National League Championship Series as well, but eventually failed to win the World Series in 2005.

The Texas Rangers were founded in 1961 and in the beginning were known as the Senators while they were based in Washington D.C. The Senators had a bad start losing almost ninety games each season for the next thirteen years. They were moved to Texas in 1972 and the name was changed to the Rangers the same year. They recorded their first winning season as the Rangers in 1974 but did not win their first title till 1996 when they finally picked up the division title. They won two more in 1998 and 1999, but it took them almost ten years to repeat the feat; winning their division twice in 2010 and 2011. The same years they also won two American League pennants and earned a wild card berth in 2012.  

Both teams have enjoyed a competitive rivalry for quite a while now and both share similar histories. They have failed to win the World Series as yet but have won their divisions multiple times. They have also faced each other in amazingly close encounters as each team plays to the other's strength and weaknesses. Even though the Rangers lead the series, the Astros have made a nice comeback in the last few months and will be hoping to catch up to their perennial division rivals.
