Barry Manilow is an extremely talented singer as well as a songwriter from New York. Born as Barry Alan Pincus in June 1943 in New York, Manilow's parents have their ancestors in Russian Jews. Manilow had a great impact of his grandparents over his life. After graduating, Manilow enrolled himself at the New York College of Music and Juilliard. In 1964, while Manilow was working at CBS, he met a director, Bro Herrod, who asked Manilow to come up with some songs for The Drunkard, which was a musical version of a melodrama. Instead, Manilow created a completely original score. The musical was a hit and it played Off-Broadway at the 13th Street Theatre for a period of eight years in New York.

In NY City his association with Bette Midler began from 1970 at the Continental Baths. By the time Manilow has released an album of his own, Midler made him sing three songs for her.

At different times in the 1980s, Manilow gave his fans and the music charts some super hit singles including "Read 'Em And Weep", "The Old Songs" and "Somewhere down the Road". In England, Manilow performed in five concerts which were all complete sell outs, all at the Royal Albert Hall. Manilow has an amazing feat of selling out a record ten nights at the Radio City Music Hall in the year 1984. This way, he set a new record in the 52 years of the venue by selling records worth almost 2 million USD. His 'One Voice' show received the nomination for Music Direction at the Emmy Awards in 1980. Also, Manilow Performed in another concert in England at the famous Wembley Arena which was broadcasted while he was performing in one of his live tours. An album came out with the title Barry, and it turned out to be Manilow's first album which didn't make it among the top ten in US.

The musical career of Manilow took a significant turn in the 1990s. Where at first his recordings consisted of him working over new music and songs, now he concentrated more on doing covers of other music. This trend started with his albums Barry Manilow in 1989 and was followed by an LP which he released in 1990 with the title of Because It's Christmas. More albums continued this trend and these included albums like Showstoppers, which was a compilation of some famous Broadway songs, Singin' with the Big Bands and an album which came out later in 1970s, Summer of '78. This album gave the hit "I Go Crazy".

In the beginning of the new century Manilow presented two special treats for his fans by the titles of Manilow Live and Manilow Country. In April 2000, the two-hour Manilow Country was aired on TNN, featuring many famous country stars, who sang their favorite hits by Manilow with a "country" twist. Manilow performed as well. In 2006, Barry Manilow's Hilton concert Music and Passion was aired on PBS, which was taped solely for the fundraising activities of the network. After being nominated for 2 Emmy awards, he won one for "Outstanding Individual Performance in a Variety or Music Program". An album following one of his previous albums which consisted of the best of fifties was released, The Greatest Songs of the Sixties in 2006. It was almost as famous as the previous album and debuted at number 2 on the Billboard chart.

Manilow went back to his home town in January 2007 and performed thrice at the MSG in NYC. The special part of these performances was that a screen showed the broadcast of his previous concerts while Manilow performed along his screen self on the stage. It was announced that a new CD will be released by Manilow in July 2007, focusing the decade he became a super-star. The Greatest Songs of the Seventies was released in September 2007.
