Sawyer Brown was founded by five members who previously performed with country pop legend, Don King as the artists' road band. These members included guitarists Jim Scholten and Bobby Randall, drummer Joe Smyth, keyboardist Gregg Hubbard and lead vocalist Mark Miller. They decided to create their own band after Don King retired from the music industry in 1981. The band was initially named "Savanna" after which the musicians decided to change it to "Sawyer Brown", naming it after a street near to their performing studio.

Initially when the band started playing music it had more of a country pop sound to its music, due to the band member's influences from King. However with the passage of a decade, the band mates started moving towards a more serious side, adding soft tunes and ballads to their compositions.

From the start till the early nineties, Sawyer Brown remained signed with Capitol Records. Through the recording company the country group released eight studio albums including the platinum selling release "The Boys Are Back" and the gold certified album "The Dirt Road". Out of these eight records, four albums were charted amongst the top ten albums on US Top Ten Country Albums and the remaining four were placed in the top 20. With such success, Sawyer Brown closed their contract with Capitol Records and signed on to Curb Records.

In 1991, bass guitarist Bobby Randall called it quits and went on to pursue other projects. He was replaced by Duncan Cameron who stayed with the group till 2004. Cameron's place was taken up by Shayne Hill who also contributed as a lead guitarist. With Curb Records, the country band released seven more albums, including the gold certified 1993 release "Outskirts of Town". Success continued its close affiliation with the group as all of these albums were charted on the US Top Country Albums Chart.

To date, the band has come forth with a whopping amount of twenty studio albums, four compilation records, two holiday releases and a live album as well. Over fifty of the group's singles have been placed on US Top Country Albums Chart, Billboard 200 and RPM Canadian Chart. Three of these singles namely "Step That Step", "Some Girls Do" and "Thank God for you" have also landed at the number one spot of the US Hot Country Songs Chart. Six other tracks have topped the RPM Canadian Singles Chart. These songs and albums have been able to bring in countless award nominations and wins for Sawyer Brown over the years.

The band has been awarded the 1985 Country Music Association's "Horizon Award" apart from winning an Academy of Country Music Award in 1997 for "Vocal Group of the Year". If this weren't enough, Sawyer Brown has also bagged three Country Music Television Awards in 1993, 1994 and 1995 for "Video Group of the Year". The band also took home six Music City News/TNN Country Music Awards for "Vocal Band of the Year" from 1993 till 1998.
