The Chocolate Nutcracker is a multicultural theatrical dance adaptation of Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovskys famed Nutcracker. Performing at the Bob Carr Performing Arts and Mahaffey Theater at the Progress Energy Center, Chocolate Nutcracker is a modern take on the holiday classic.

The Chocolate Nutcracker mainly features children and youth across Central Florida with professional choreographers from across the country. During their global travels, a variety of dance genres such as ballet, tap, modern, jazz, gospel and hip-hop provide the soundtrack for the choreographed movements.

Since Chocolate Nutcracker puts together the work of numerous professional choreographers, these choreographers have trained at the Boston Ballet, Miami Contemporary Ballet, Kentucky Ballet, Joffrey Ballet, Alvin Ailey and Broadway.

With a cast of theater professionals and more than 500 children from throughout Central Florida, the performances are set in early 50s Harlem. More than 300 performers ages 5 to 18 have practiced at John Hopkins Middle School for more than three months to bring The Chocolate Nutcracker to life.

The professional and local choreographers have trained children and youth to perform scenes in ballet, tap, modern, swing, jazz, african, praise dance and hip hop.

Featuring an array of new-to-stage children along with principal dancers and the Dundu Dole Urban African Ballet Company, the Chocolate Nutcraker is going to rock the stage and blow you away.

Responding to a question what keeps these young performers coming back?, performers said that they love to perform onstage because they love to make peoples faces light up with excitement.The experience is about more than just dancing though.
