Snow Maiden is majorly known as a fairy tale opera, taking the audience to lands unknown. Rimsky-Korsakov intended to present something different from the usual operas and bring a little magic to the stage. The usual idea of an opera is a sad tale presented in a serious way; however, this was a totally new idea. Though it was a not less than a big experiment, it worked real well and was a great hit. Exotic set designs and magnificent lightening effects make the opera even more enchanting. Apart from Snow Maiden, Rimsky-Korsakov is known for his orchestral compositions named Russian Easter Festival and Capriccio Espagnol.
Rimsky-Korsakov has also composed music repertoires and staples for about fourteen operas. Korsakov belonged to "The Five," a group of composers from the late 1880's. He was famous for bringing to stage the operas that had more of a touch of fantasy than reality. His adopted work also had a touch of folk lore. He tried to develop more of classical music that had a hint of nationalism. Along with The Five, which included Mily Balakirev, Alexander Borodin, Modest Mussorgsky, Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov and César Cui, he created a number of never to be forgotten operas.
