Theatergoers have a new show to look forward to this summer. Lincoln Center Theater has announced its latest production titled "Shows For Days", created by the playwright Douglas Carter Beane. The play will have Jerry Zaks as its director and Patti LuPone, Michael Urie and Dale Soules have been finalized as the main cast. According to the news so far, preliminary performances will start in early June and premiere will take place on 29th June.
Douglas Carter Beane has been nominated for a Tony Award previously for his acclaimed play "The Little Dog Laughed" and two of his shows, "The Nance" and "Cinderella" are ready to premiere on Broadway this season. In "Shows For Days", he has made his personal life the subject and will chart his journey in theatre. The idea for the play came from his upbringing and his passion for the performing arts. Set in Pennsylvania in 1972, the comedy features 14 years old Carter played by Michael Urie, who acts as his alter-ego and the narrator. Life sketch of Carter is presented on live stage as how he was introduced to the theatre community and worked under the phenomenal director and stage designer, Irene. Patti LuPone will play the role of Irene, who was considered "an indomitable force of nature" in the world of theatre.
According to Carter Beane, Shows For Days is autobiographical and reveals how he really got into theatre and where he's standing today. He has come a long way from where he started - sneaking out of his house as a child to participate in his local community theatre, to become an acclaimed playwright today. Two of his shows are ready for a simultaneous run on Broadway. He has penned books for award winning Broadway productions like Sister Act and Xanadu, latter earning him an Outer Critics Circle Award.
Shows For Days will be hitting the stage with a highly talented creative team. Jerry Zaks will also be returning to the Lincoln Center Theater. His earlier shows at the theatre include, The House of Blue Leaves, The Front Page, Anything Goes, Six Degrees of Separation and A Bad Friend. His credentials further include 30 productions that he directed in New York and for his outstanding direction he has won four Tony and Drama Desk Awards each, along with two Outer Critics Circle Awards, as well as an Obie Award. His repertoire is highlighted with acclaimed plays like Guys and Dolls, La Cage Aux Folles, Lend Me A Tenor, A Bronx Tale, The Marriage of Bette and Boo, Beyond Therapy and Sister Mary Ignatius Explains It All For You.
Singer and actress, Patti LuPone is known for her versatility and is a force to be reckoned with in the music scene. She has shown her singing prowess with the all-time hit musicals, Les Miserables and Anything Goes. Sharing the stage with her will be the equally talented and versatile actor, Michael Urie, who has found immense fame for his role in the hit show, Ugly Betty.
Shows For Days will initially have a limited run, so it's best to buy Shows For Days tickets in advance. Although there are no previews yet, you can count on it being a quality production with Carter as its playwright.
