Kelly Pavlik
Born on April 4th, 1982 in Youngstown - Ohio, Kelly Robert Pavlik also known as 'The Ghost' is a leading middleweight champion of the world, holding a record at 32-0-0 with 29 of some clean-sweep victories through knockout.
Graduating from Lowellville High School and Mahoning County Joint Vocational School in 2000, Pavlik was part of a Slovak-American family residing in Youngstown's southern area called Lansingyille and spent him childhood among conventional ethnic people in the neighborhood. Jack Loew of Youngstown's south side Boxing Gym has been the trainer to Pavlik since the beginning of his career.
Pavlik has to his credit the victory in 26 fights, prior to his entry in competition after which he began his professional boxer career in 2000. The very first contest of the professional boxing career began on October 7th, 2005 against Fulgencio Zuniga for the NABF Middleweight title. In the first round, Pavlik was knocked down with a left hook but he stood up again and fought back until he won the fight leaving Zuniga wounded with a cut over his right eye by a head collision. Zuniga's corner gave up the fight in ninth round.Pavlik fought former WBO Junior Middleweight Champion, Bronco McKart by sixth round TKO in his first attempt to save his NABF Middleweight title on July 7th, 2006. In fourth round, McKart succeeded to score a knockdown when Pavlik's gloves touched the canvas. McKart was knocked down by Pavlik twice in sixth round after which the referee ended the match leaving McKart defeated.
On November 2nd, 2007 Pavlik made the highlight news in Youngstown's Chevrolet Center when he has a clean-sweep over Lenord Pierre. During the late first round, Pavlik scored a right hand knock down, stunning the opponent and the audience in both second and third rounds followed by another left hook after which the referee pronounced it to be a clear victory for Pavlik. On May 19th, 2007, Edison Miranda was beaten by Pavlik by total knock out in the seventh round in a WBC eliminator bout, launching him as the number one middleweight. Miranda overlooked Pavlik and focused more on challenging the champion Jermain Taylor (facing Cory Spinks for the same challenge). With the opening whistle of the game Pavlik focused on smashing down Miranda; who kept on fighting back in defense with some great shots yet Pavlik remained dominant with his over-exhausting tough fight to the competitor resulting in a beat-up for Miranda. Earlier Pavlik was heard commenting to some sports journalists that he was looking forward to back Miranda up.
On September 29th, 2007 Pavlik gave a tough fight to Jermain Taylor whose trainer Emmanuel Steward, during the pre-fight build-up, publicly said that Pavlik was over-rated and he assured a white-wash win from Taylor. Pavlik was banged and flipped in the ring for most part of the second round. Still using his expertise, Pavlik turned the tables by trapping Taylor in the corner. HBO commentator Larry Merchant thought that fight was even by the sixth round. To Pavlik's advantage, Taylor was frantically seen aim less power-punching during the seventh round, after which just a few power-shots right on the head by Pavlik, crushed Taylor down towards Pavlik's corner. Pavlik in his disastrous rage hit Taylor until an uppercut banged his onto the canvas after which the referee Steve Smoger marked it end of fight with Pavlik receiving a TKO win.
This success brought with it the titles of WBC & WBO Middleweight Champion of the world along with Ring Magazine Middleweight title. Ever since Pavlik has been looking forward to playing another non-titled game, which is most likely to be witnessed at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas to be held in February. It is not an easy task to justify the ranking for the four major world titles and merge them to have undisputed champions yet the most reliable and sole heredity is the Middleweight Championship. In this scenario, Bernard Hopkins has remained a stable undisputed champion since he held the WBC, WBA & IBF World Middleweight titles, played a confederation match against Oscar De La Hoya in 2004. Hopkins won over De La Hoya (holding WBO world Middleweight Champion title) to become the first boxer to merge the four major titles.
IBF took back the title from Taylor prior to his fight with Hopkins in 2005. Hopkins faced defeat loosing all four of his titles to Taylor. His next match was against hyped Winky Wright before which WBA stripped their title from Taylor. Match ended up in a draw and Taylor maintained all his titles. Until September 29th, 2007, the match against Pavlik, Jermain Taylor remained the triumphant king for two years. Pavlik's great smash down to Taylor rewarded him with the heredity of the strongest ancestry in boxing along with the WBC & WBO World Titles.
He carries two titles but he has the uninterrupted valid line of all four belts. He is the Universally Recognized World Middleweight Champion.
