The women's event started in 2011 and in 2012, it was men and women joint tournament.

The proceeds from the tournament partially go to the Washington Tennis & Education Foundation which seeks to improve living standards of area's youth through education, tennis and community based activities teaching discipline, self-esteem and improving educational performance.
The Tournament is recognized as one of the top 20 men's Tournaments in the world offering $1.5 million prize money and 500 ranking points to the winner. For women's tournament, prize money is $220,000 and 280 ranking points. Besides this more worldwide exposure is in the interest of the players.
In the men's singles, Andre Agassi holds the record with five winning titles and six finals overall. He along with Juan Martin Del Potro and Michael Chang holds the record for most consecutive titles winning two. While in women's tournament, Magdaléna Rybáriková is the current champion.
