Toronto Symphony Orchestra
Music lovers in Canada are lucky to have numerous quality-oriented orchestral groups and symphonies in their country. Some of these have even reached to international audience as well.

One such musical masterpiece of Canada is a Toronto based orchestral group, Toronto Symphony Orchestra. The group has successfully taken the rich musical tradition of Canada a step further and stands out from others because of their universal appeal.

The Toronto Symphony Orchestra traces its roots back to 1906 with the formation of Toronto Conservatory Symphony Orchestra. After two years of its formation, the orchestra changed its name to Toronto Symphony Orchestra in 1908. However, this organization did not garnered desired results and shut down soon.

In 1922, Viennese-born conductor Luigi von Kunits teamed up with some of Toronto based musicians to reform the orchestra. This resulted in the formation of New Symphony Orchestra. From there first performance at Massey Hall in April 1923, the group showed positive sighs and got appreciation. Four years later, they changed the name to Toronto Symphony Orchestra that has now become a guiding force of Canadas theater scene.

Also called TSO, the Toronto Symphony Orchestra is one of Canada's largest symphony orchestras. Resided at the Roy Thomson Hall, they perform more than 125 concerts every year that are enough to keep them busy. Still, they remarkably maintained a strong presence in the international music scene and perform in many live concerts all over the world.

It took many years to Toronto Symphony Orchestra in becoming Canada's foremost orchestral group. Its founder and first music director Von Kunits died in 1931. He was followed by Sir Ernest MacMillan who led the ensemble till 1956, the longest period for any TSOs directors. The group progressed a lot during this period and widened its scope quite effectively.

After Sir Ernest MacMillan left Toronto Symphony Orchestra, it kept running under the guidance of different conductors. These include Walter Susskind, Seiji Ozawa, Karl Ancerl, Victor Feldbrill, Sir Andrew Davis, Gunther Herbig and Jukka-Pekka Saraste. Symphonys present director Peter Oundjian is now conducting the ensemble in all their shows and albums.

Though the line up of Toronto Symphony Orchestra consists of the brightest music talent from all over Canada, it has also performed with some famous international acts as well. They have appeared with and in front of Martha Argerich, Yo-Yo Ma, Maxim Vengerov, Evgeny Kissin, Jessye Norman Kathleen Battle and Karen Kain.

The attendance of patrons exceeds 400,000 in Toronto Symphony Orchestra home concerts only. About five million listen to them through CBC Radio networks and their recordings reach the worlds audience. Indeed, the orchestra has a huge fan base of classical music listeners both in Canada and USA.

The real magic of Toronto Symphony Orchestra can only be felt through their live concerts. Over the years, they have done successful tours of America, Japan, Australia and Europe.

They also hold the honor of initiating the New Creations Festival, a contemporary music event conceived by TSOs Music Director Peter Oundjian that has been holding since 2005. Besides this, their programmes related to music education has outreached many areas of Canada and benefited many children.

All in all, Toronto Symphony Orchestra is one the best symphonic ensembles of Canada. Their live shows are worth-attending for everyone with a taste of good music. So make sure to catch TSO live whenever they perform in your city.
