The Smothers Brothers
An American music-and-comedy duo, the Smothers Brothers consists of the brothers Tom on acoustic guitar and Dick Smothers on string bass.

The brothers were both born on Governors Island in New York Harbor and raised in the Los Angeles area. The two graduated from Redondo Union High School and attended San Jose State University.

The Brothers briefly worked for a folk group, the Casual Quintet. It wasnt until 1958 that the duo made their debut. By 1961, they had become a popular act in clubs and released the most successful album, titled Live at the Purple Onion.

1960s saw The Smothers Brothers frequently appearing on television variety shows while releasing several popular record albums. The brothers own television variety show, The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour became one of the most influential American TV programs.

Premiered in 1967, The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour started out as a slightly hip version of the typical comedy-variety show. However, it quickly evolved into a show that extended the boundaries of television satire. It was closed in 1969 for its content that was favoring the emerging counterculture and criticizing the political mainstream.

The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour contributed increasing pop singer Jennifer Warnes critical acclaim. Jennifer Warnes was a regular act on the series. The show was also noted for featuring television premiere of Mason Williams' hit record, called Classical Gas.

Also, it doesnt go without saying that The Comedy Hour series proved to be a great platform that showcased creative talent of emerging potential musical artists.

Amongst them are Joan Baez, Harry Belafonte, Cass Elliot, Cream, The Doors, Donovan, Janis Ian, Peter, Jefferson Airplane, Paul and Mary, Steppenwolf, Spanky and Our Gang, The Who, Pete Seeger and the list goes on.

Blacklisted in the 50s, Pete Seeger never showed up on network television until the comedy-variety show of the Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour gave him airtime to perform. Another defining moment in the series came when The Who destroyed their instruments using explosives at the end of their performance.

Viewers remembered the performance for long. The following year saw the show broadcasting music videos for The Beatles' popular songs Revolution and Hey Jude. Despite a successful run, the show was closed in 1969.

By the end of 60s, the Smothers Brothers had earned a satisfied fan-base and fame. In 1970s, the two continued to host comedy-variety shows such as The Smothers Brothers Show and The Tom and Dick Smothers Brothers Specials I and II.

The year 1981 saw Tom and Dick Smothers playing non brothers in a light drama called Fitz and Bones. Tom played a character of a cameraman, Bones Howard, while Dick appeared as an investigative reporter, Ryan Fitzpatrick. Fitz and Bones was aired at a Bay Area television station.

In 1988, Tom and Dick came up with a new series of The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour. The comedy-variety show was featured during a Writers Guild of America strike, allowing the brothers, their staff and guest stars to perform their own material.

Also on Tom and Dicks credits are their works in films such as Martin Scorsese's Casino and Once Upon a Mattress to name a few.

During subsequent decades, the two continued to work on stage, television and in films while touring the country as the longest-lived comedy duo in history. The year 2008 marked the Smothers Brothers 50th year of performing together.

If you have a nerve to experience comedy beyond satire, make sure to reserve your tickets to The Smothers Brothers and see them performing LIVE in your City!
