Preservation Hall Jazz Band takes its name from the well-known Preservation Hall, which is a celebrated music venue located right in the center of New Orleans’s French Quarter, and was founded by Sandra and Allan Jaffe in 1961.  The band has been quite the globe-trotter, spreading its music and following its mission of preserving the jazz art form so native to New Orleans. Regardless of whether they are playing at Lincoln Center of at Carnegie Hall, or even for the Royals such as those of Thailand or of Britain, their music has been consistent in representing the theme of joyfulness and timeless spirit. With the guidance of Ben Jaffe, their current director and the son of founding members Sandra and Allan Jaffe, Preservaton Hall has continued with intense dedication and consciousness of its most worthy attributes in the present era as a record label, band and venue.

Preservation Hall Jazz Band first started touring in 1963 and since then several bands went on to tour successfully for years under the title of Preservation Hall. Several charter members form the band plays with the pioneering figures that played a significant role in inventing jazz at the beginning of the early twentieth century such as Buck Johnson, Roll Morton, Buddy Bolden, and Louis Armstrong. Important leading members from the band’s history include couple Billie and De De Pierce, siblings Percy and Willie Humphrey and renowned pianist Sweet Emma Barrett, while those responsible for making significant modern day contributions include John Brunious and Wendall. These artists along with dozens of others gave lessons of their skills to the younger generation that is now following in their footsteps and so is the current lineup.

Preservation Hall Jazz Band has been touring across the United States for the past twenty five years during which time it has not only popularized jazz the way it set out to, but has also received significant praise from critics, alongside winning awards. In 2006, it won the National Medal of Art, while in 2007 it received an invitation to participate in the exciting Goin’ Home: Tribute to Fats Domino, for which it performed its version of the song When Saints Go Marching, in collaboration with Theresa Andersson.
