Based in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Philadelphia Orchestra was founded in 1900 by Fritz Scheel followed by Leandro Campanari who took over in 1907 and served as interim conductor. It was Leopold Stokowski who became music director in 1912 and brought the orchestra to national prominence. Following his footsteps, Eugene Ormandy in 1936 conducted orchestra's best known recordings and took it to several successful worldwide tours including performance at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing that made diplomatic history. Ricardo Muti's recordings include symphonies of Johannes Brahms, Ludwig van Beethoven and Alexander Scriabin. In 2006, Carol Jantsch was appointed as principal tuba, first female principal tuba in American orchestra.

Philadelphia Orchestra is one of the "Big Five" American orchestras and its home is the Kimmel Center of the Performing Arts. Designed by Rafael Viñoly, the architect and Russell Johnson, the center accommodates 2,500 audiences in a Verizon Hall and 650 in Perelman Theater for chamber music performances.

The orchestra also made digital recordings of Complete Beethoven Symphonies and became the first one to do so. The most notable recording of the orchestra is Rachmaninoff's Symphonic Dances, last work of Sergei Rachmaninoff. Other recordings include two of Brahms's Hungarian Dances, soundtrack for Walt Disney's Fantasia and some of the dances from Borodin's Prince Igor.
