The 65 year old star became acquainted with music very early in her life. She joined the Vienne Academy of Music at the age of 12 and found herself studying along with some of the biggest names of today such as Wilhelm Kempff, Richard Hauser and Stefan Askenase. Two years later, Uchida gave her premier Viennese recital which was held at the Vienna Musikverein. Apart from that, she has also had the privilege of studying with Maria Curcio who is the last known student of Artur Schnabel.

Uchida's passion for playing the piano increased as she grew older. At the age of 21, she participated in the Beethoven Competition held in Vienne and bagged the first position. In the following year she came second in the International Chopin Piano Competition and also in 1975's Leeds Piano Competition.

Her list of accomplishments and work profile goes on and on. She received the Suntory Music Award in 1986 and three years later, won the Gramophone Award for the 'Best Instrumental Recording' for her work on the Piano Sonatas of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. Uchida has also worked as the Music Director of the Ojai Music Festival in 1998 in collaboration with David Zinman who is a renowned violinist and conductor.

Not only is Uchida is a famed translator of the works of Chopin, Beethoven, Mozart, Debussy, Schoenberg and Schubert but her recordings of various Piano Concertos is also very popular. In the year 2011, she earned herself a Grammy Award for her recording of the Mozart Piano Concertos number 23 and 24 in 2009 in which she led the Cleveland Orchestra and also played solo.

Uchida strongly believes in helping young artists and musicians to develop who have the potential to make great music even though at a slow pace than the rest. She therefore became a part of the Borletti-Buitoni Trust as a trustee. The Borletti-Biutoni Trust is an organization started in 2002 which aids young artists all over the world in improving and sustaining their musical careers on an international level. She believes in learning music in depth and having something to say in your work rather than aiming to make money or attaining fame through it.

Moreover, Uchida has served as the artist in residence for several orchestra groups including Berlin Philharmonic and Cleveland Orchestra. She has also accompanied famous pianist Richard Goode in co-directing the Marlboro Music School and Festival. In the year 2008, the star was awarded the 'Disc of The Year' and also the 'Instrumentalist of The Year' awards by the BBC Music Magazine.

Furthermore, Uchida received the yearly 'Music Award' by the Royal Philharmonic Society in 2003 and exactly nine years later, in 2012, it was revealed that she will awarded with the society's Gold Medal. For any artist this is considered a highly prestigious award and several other renowned artists have been bestowed with this honor previously. These include Johannes Brahms, Frederick Delius, Sir Edward Elgar and many others.
