Marcus Roberts is the founder of the trio which consists of three amazingly talented musicians; the famous stride pianist, Marcus Roberts, drummer Jason Marsalis and bassist Rodney Jordan. Called as "the genius of the modern piano" by the famed trumpeter Wynton Marsalis, Roberts is a fine example of passion and courage. Soon after losing his eye-sight at the age of five, Roberts started playing piano and had his first formal piano lesson at twelve years of age. Later, he attended the Florida School for the Deaf and the Blind of Florida State University where he studied classical piano with Leonidus Lipovetsky. He also won a number of competitions garnering many awards during his time at the university.

Roberts's first big break came in 1985 when he was selected as a sideman by Wynton Marsalis. In the following years, he became Marsalis's close friend and a disciple. Togetherthey have ventured on many projects, producing three albums. Roberts stayed with Marsalis for six years. After that Roberts started releasing his own records as a soloist. His debut album "The Truth Is Spoken Here" came out in 1988. Most of Roberts's albums pay tributes to the great jazz musicians of the past. Reflecting his versatility as an artist, his discography is a legacy of critically acclaimed recorded music which includes works of jazz duets, trio arrangements, live recordings of symphony orchestras and large ensemble works.

Another of Roberts's talent lies in interpreting the works of Gershwin, Monk, Morton and Ellington among others. He is also giving his services at the Florida State University as the Assistant Professor of Jazz Studies. Roberts has received a number of commissioning awards by Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, ASCAP, Chamber Music America, Jazz at Lincoln Center and the North Carolina Association of Jazz Educators.

Among his most famous compositions include "Romance, Swing, and the Blues", "Time and Circumstance", "From Rags to Rhythm", "In Honor of Duke," "Deep in the Shed," and "The Sound of the Band." Roberts's dedication to jazz music led him to start his own trainings and piano workshops where he and his trio provide lectures and master classes regularly. Residency programs are also offered for the training of young talented musicians. He is also the Associate Artistic Director of the Savannah Music Festival where the high school band competition is held annually.
