Greek virtuoso violinist Leonidas Kavakos took the classical music world by storm when he performed his debut concert at the 1984 Athens Festival. Since then he has been playing all over the world starting with debuts in America, Europe, and Asia, while touring, performing recitals and taking part in various international competitions. The artist now tours across North America every year with many major orchestras, such as the Montreal and Chicago Symphony Orchestras. Currently, he is performing as a conductor, alongside which he was made principal guest artist at Camerata Salzburg in 2001, performing with the orchestra as the conductor and soloist. In addition he was the designated artistic director at Camerata Salzburg where he also took the position of Sir Roger Norrington in 2007, which he later resigned.

Today, he is most renowned as a keen chamber musician, presenting his own annual chamber music festival in Athens, his home town, while he continued to perform at various international festivals. Leonidas Kavakos is quite a natural musician since he was born into a family of musicians, and started studying the violin when he was only five. He continued his studies with Stelios Kanfantaris at the Hellinistic Conservatory, following which he gained the Onassis Foundation scholarship that allowed him to attend Josef Gingold-taught master classes at Indiana University. The next year he debuted in the Athens Festival and has been recognized for his extraordinary talents since. He first performed in the US in 1986, a year after which he played recitals at venues throughout the country.

His popularity in Europe spread rapidly after he won the Helsinki, and now extensively works in the best-known concert halls all across the continent, performing with world class orchestras like the Vienna Philaharmonic, Berlin Philharmonic and the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra. He has made appearances at such festivals as the Salzburg Festival, Verbier Festival, the Lucerne Festival as well as Stars of the White Nights Festival. Within the UK in particular, he has performed with numerous orchestras, beginning in 1992 when he played the magnificent Stravinsky concerto at the London Proms. Currently, he holds the position of artist in residence at Berlin Philharmonic. Kavakos debuted in Japan very successfully in 1988 with a string of performances that included recitals at Casals Hall in Tokyo. He has since toured the country with the renowned English Chamber Orchestra and has performed concerts with the New Japan Philharmonic and Tokyo Metropolitan Symphony Orchestra. He has been given the title of 'Violinists of Violinists' by Strad Magazine.

Leonidas Kavakos has garnered numerous accolades over the years since the very beginning of his career starting with his win at the International Sibelius Competition in 1985. The following year, he won a silver medal for his performance at the famous Indianapolis International Violin Competition. In addition, he won brought home ht first price from the Naumburg Competition held in New York, as well as the Paganini Violin Competition, in 1988. In 2009, Kavakos won the ECHO Klassik award in the category of Recordings of the Year- 19th Century Concerts- Violin, for his recording as soloist and conductor of Mendelssohn Violinkonzert that he performed with Camerata.

Some of his biggest hit albums comprises of his interpretations of eighteenth century masters and include Jean Sibelius: Violin Concerto, Ravel: Sonate Posthume, Mozart: Violin Concertos, Mendelssohn: Violin Concerto, and Stravinsky/ Bach. Other compositions performed by him include those by the likes of Paganini, Schubert, Tchaikovsky, Debussy, Ysaye, and Wieniaeski, all of which he has recorded for Delos and Finlandia Records. In 2006, he made records on Sony/BMG comprising of a symphony and five violin concertos by Mozart, in which he played as the conductor and soloist of Camerata Salzburg.
