ICCA Varsity Vocals International, part of the International Championship of Collegiate A Cappella, was formerly known as the National Championship of Collegiate A Cappella. Today, it is an international competition in which hundreds of groups from various colleges in the US compete for the award. In the competition, America is divided into five different regions, each of which selects its champion and then these collegiate champions compete for the number one spot. The championship was first launched in 1996, and has been held each year since then. Apart from the US contestants, many teams from Europe participate as well.
ICCA Varsity Vocals International is the only international tournament of its kind, which provides a platform for a cappella student groups from colleges. In its eighteenth season today, it was founded by Deke Sharon and Adam Farb in 1996. It has even inspired other competitions, such as the International Championship of High School A Cappella, which features high school teams.
In the US, the ICCA is competed in six regions; ICCA Midwest, ICCA West, ICCA South, ICCA Great Lakes, ICCA Mid-Atlantic and ICCA Northeast. International groups, such as champions of the UK's Voice Festival UK, also compete in the tournament. At the start of the year, applications from all over the nation are received and initially, 250 groups competing in the tournament are selected. Several quarterfinal events are held in a region, followed by semifinals and then international finals in the US, with five regional champions. The first winners of the championship were The Loreleis from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. The 2013 champions were Northeastern University's The Nor'easters.
