Lacrosse originated somewhere in the seventeenth century. During those days hundreds of people would line up against each other to make two teams and the games would at times go on for two to three days. It was in the year 1856 that the "Montreal Lacrosse Club" by William George Beers. He trimmed the number of players on each team down to twelve and also reduced the playing time. Lacrosse under those rules made its debut in 1867.

 

By the time the next century came around various educational institutions had picked-up lacrosse which played a big part in making it more popular. The sport began to come out of its traditional regions and started to spread to different part of the U.S. it has since gone on to rank among the most watched collegiate sports in the country.

 

The first official lacrosse game between colleges was played in 22nd November, 1877 when Manhattan College took on New York University. The sport had begun to attract a lot of attention which resulted in the first tournament to be held four years later. It was a monumental occasion that ended with Harvard coming out on top in the final over Princeton.

 

From 1881 all the way to 1934 every association on college level began to crown their champion on the basis of the team's record over the course of a regular season. It was in the year 1969 that members of the United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association sat together to agree on beginning a tournament on the basis of the playoffs format to crown the national lacrosse champion.

 

NCAA sponsorship of the sport began in the year 1971 and immediately went about making sure that a lacrosse championship is held every year for the top tier, the Division I. The structure now comprises of sixty three teams which are further divided into nine conferences. Another four separate teams also compete as a member of the D-I programs who are not associated with any of the nine conferences.

 

What started as a ritual centuries ago has now gone on to become a very important part of the Americas modern day sporting culture.
