Born in 1963 in Germany, Anne-Sophie Mutter started playing piano at the age of five. She started studying violin soon afterwards with Erna Honigberger, a student of Carl Fesch. She was a child prodigy taking part in competitions winning prizes and surprising everyone with her talent. She won first place in Jugend Musiziert contest for young musicians in 1970 and then again in 1974. She was invited to play with Berlin Philharmonic at the age of thirteen. She made her public debut at Lucerne Festival with Mozart's Violin Concerto No. 4 in 1976. In 1977, she made her appearance at the Salzburg Festival and paved her way for international career.
Mutter released her first recording of the Mozart Third and Fifth Concertos with Karajan and the Berlin Philharmonic in 1978. She debuted in America with New York Philharmonic under Zubin Mehta. She was made honorary fellow of Royal Academy of Music in London in 1985. She also served as head of faculty of International violin studies and was later made an honorary member. She made her first appearance in Carnegie Hall Recital in 1988. In 1998, she recorded complete set of Beethoven's Violin Sonatas with Lambert Orkis, which were broadcasted on television in many countries. Her work received critical acclaim and positive reviews everywhere.

Her other awards include Bavarian Maximilian Order for Science and Art in 2002, Herbert von Karajan Music Prize in 2003, Grand Decoration of Honour for Services to the Republic of Austria in 2007, Mendelssohn Prize in 2008, European St. Ulrichs Prixe in 2009, Brahms Prize in 2011, Atlantic Council Distinguished Artistic Leadership Award in 2011, Gustav-Adolf Prize in 2011 and many others all around the world.
Mutter is most renowned for her classic violin repertory and performances of contemporary music. She has worked with renowned composers including Norbert Moret, Witold Lutoslawski, Wolfgang Rihm, Krzysztof Penderecki and Sebastian Currier. Several pieces which have been specifically written for her or dedicated to her include Henri Dutilleux's Sur le même accord, Witold Lutoslawski's Chain 2 and the orchestral version of Partita, Krzysztof Penderecki's Second Violin Concerto, Wolfgang Rihm's Gesungene Zeit ("Time Chant") and Dyade. She also devotes her time fostering exceptionally talented young musicians.
