The city of Walhalla has the honor of being the 2nd oldest in the state. The history of the city is entwined with the Red River Valley and fur trade. The fur trading post of the North West Company was established in 1797. The founder of the post was a man called David Thompson. The post was moved elsewhere in 1801. Constructed in mid 1840s, Gingras Trading Post also serves the city. Antoine Gingras was the founder of this post. One of the oldest buildings of the city is the Kittson Trading Post. It has now been included as one of the historic sites and is looked after by the State Historical Society. The city of Walhalla is home to a small community and is said to be the heart of the Rendezvous Region in the state of North Dakota. Since it is located on the bank of Pembina River, it offers all sorts of activities related to the river. It is used for irrigation as well as recreation. The river provides great rafting.
