The area of Jupiter was first explored by the Spanish explorers that came to the area searching for treasure in the 16th century. However, they couldn't exactly find treasure in the area, but what they did find was the golden sunshine, beautiful beaches and serene rivers, all in a lush tropical setting. The city is named after the Indian tribe Jeaga (called Jobes) that lived at the mouth of the Loxahatchee River during the 1500's. The Spaniards pronounced Jobes Hoe bay, and gave us the name Hobe Sound. The area of Jupiter originally came to the lime light when Jonathan Dickinson was shipwrecked on the shores of Jupiter. There is also a state park in the vicinity now that bears his name. Over the years, many developments and changes took place in Jupiter. One of the most identifiable landmarks, known as the Jupiter Lighthouse, also got erected there in 1860. However, in 2004, the Hurricane Jeanne destroyed the paint from the upper half of the tower and it got re painted soon, using a potassium silicate mineral coating. The tower today has become somewhat symbolic to Jupiter as well.
Jupiter, presently, acts as a great vacation spot, and entertains millions of visitors year round. Due to its tropical temperatures and perennial sunny skies, the area is most crowded during the winter season. Famous for having white sandy beaches, the region of Jupiter encourages great sports activities, outdoor activities throughout its parks, and residential areas at the length of the waterways.
