The city, Flagstaff in Northern Arizona! The name is taken from a Ponderosa Pine flagpole built by some scouts from Boston on the grand occasion of the United States first centennial independence occasion. The city remains the county seat of Coconino County. The landmarks near Flagstaff are the Ponderosa Pine forest while it is present near the southwestern strip of the Colorado Plateau. The city also lies next to Mount Elden. It has the highest mountain range on the south of the San Francisco Peaks in Arizona. It was year 1876 when Thomas F. McMillan built a cabin the on the west of Flagstaff thereby becoming the first of the settlers. Then later on, the city started growing in the 1880s with the initiation of railroad works and post office. The year 1886 marked the city as the largest one on the west coast of USA. In 1930, with the help of an observatory established here, a complex telescope so designed helped the discovery of the Pluto. Apart from these commercial projects, the city also prides itself on its educational ventures. Northern Arizona Normal School developed in 1899 is famous here which was converted into Northern Arizona University in 1966.Flagstaff has a rich cultural history. In April 1899, the Flagstaff Symphony opened up at a popular Opera House. The orchestra is still held here at an Auditorium in Northern Arizona University. Many folk and contemporary musicians also perform here apart from the music festivals that are held here. One such festival is the Flagstaff Friends which takes its roots from old Music Festival and Pickin? Pickin? in the Pines, a music festival that lasts for a few days. This excludes many free concerts organized at Flagstaff. Some of the theatre shows held here includes those organized by the Northern Arizona University Department. Due to its ventures, the department has won many distinguishing awards which covers multiple invitations to a college Theatre Festival. Then, since 1995, the Flagstaff Light Opera Company has held its shows all through the year at the Sinagua High School auditorium. Many dance companies present concerts and other free shows during the holiday seasons.
Summer season in Flagstaff gets rich with many exciting festivals like Hopi and Navajo Festivals of Arts and Crafts and others. The Coconino County Fair is conducted every year at a county where there are carnival drives, livestock sale, in addition to other activities. Then a very colorful events marks the new year celebrations when a 70 pound, six feet long pine cone is thrown from a roof-top at midnight. This activity started in 1999 with the marking of the third millennium. The Museum of Northern Arizona contains exhibits of native art, photography and anthropology.
The Center for High Altitude Training is present in Flagstaff in Northern Arizona University. At this venue, many athletes train here in a good environment. The center has been set up by the United States Olympic Committee. A team in the Arizona Cardinals practiced training at National Arizona University. The city offers a lot to people wanting to have outdoor fun since it has high elevation, a diverse landscape and agreeable weather inviting campers, climbers and mountain bikers from the across USA. The parks here like Thorpe Park and Buffalo Park cater to the visual delight of nature lovers. Wheeler Park serves the purpose for hosting concerts. A trail system runs through the city for hikers, runners or cyclists.
Flagstaff has been the site of filming of several movies lately. Some parts of the movie Forrest Gump were filmed here. Also worth mentioning is the movie Little Miss Sunshine that won an Oscar award in 2007. In the 1940s and 1950s, more than 100 western movies were filmed in the areas near Flagstaff.
