Cypress
The city, which is often called Cypress-Fairbanks, or simply as Cy-Fair, is none other than Cypress, Texas. Situated in Harris County, Texas, USA, Cypress is found within the extraterritorial jurisdiction of the City of Houston.
It is located next to the Northwest Freeway, also known as US Highway 290, which is only 32 km sq. northwest of Downtown Houston. The region was once a rural area, but today it is a vast suburban area, falling in the list of major inhabited and uptown communities of the nation. The city offers many outdoor and other entertainment facilities to its residents and visitors alike.
Sitting at latitude 29.968N, and longitude -95.696W, Cypress elevation is 151 feet. In 2000 the Cypress-Fairbanks area reported a population of 18,527. Initially, during the early 1800s, the area now known as Cypress was inhabited by several Atakapan Indian tribes. These Indian tribes soon disappeared once the white (German) settlers had occupied the area during 1840s.
The real development in the area began in the 1980s, when major thoroughfares, streets and schools were constructed, such as Huffmeister Road, Telge Road and Matzke Elementary all these bearing the names of the original German settlers, thus, reflecting the German heritage in the area. A few master plan communities were also built during the time of 1980s, changing Cypress from a rural area to a developed and a suburban area.
The citys fire department also formed when the Cypress and Fairbanks volunteer fire departments united jointly to form the Cypress-Fairbanks Volunteer Fire Department, which is now known simply as Cy-Fair VFD. This is the reason why the City of Cypress is also referred to as Cypress-Fairbanks or Cy-Fair. The Cy-Fair VFD, comprising twelve stations, is the largest volunteer fire department in the whole of USA.
The City of Cypress is served by one of the fastest growing school districts in the US and also the third largest in the Texas state, known as Cypress-Fairbanks Independent School District. Other schools situated in the area include Cy-Fair High School, Cypress Creek High School, Jersey Village High School, Cypress Falls High School, Cypress Springs High School, Cypress Woods High School, Cypress Ridge High School, Langham Creek High School, Cypress Ranch High School, and Cypress Lakes High School. Many universities are also found inside the city along with some private schools. In addition, Cypress is home to Cy-Fair campus of the Lone Star College District.
