Lying on the River Dee, close to the border with Wales, Chester is the county town of Cheshire, England. The city was founded as a Roman fort named Deva Victrix in the year 79 by the Roman Legio II Adiutrix.

After the Romans left in the 5th century, the Saxons fortified the region against the Danes and gave Chester its name. It was one of the last towns in England to fall to the Normans in the Norman conquest of England.
The City of Chester has the reputation of being the English medieval city par excellence. With most sections of the wall listed Grade I, it has the most complete city walls in Britain. Railways, canals and new roads marked industrial revolution in Chester, which saw substantial expansion and development in the following years. The City has a great influence of Victorian architecture and Chester Town Hall and the Grosvenor Museum are evident of it.

Earlier it was known as the Blue Coat Band and formed in 1853. It is a thriving 3rd section brass band. All members of the band wear a blue-jacketed uniform with an image of the Eastgate clock on the breast pocket.
In 2007, Chesters cultural sector would undergo through a major transformation. The Odeon Cinema and the Gateway Theatre had closed as part of the Development. The city also has some nightclubs, which are soon going to be added to the development. Also to the east side, are the UKs largest zoological gardens named Chester Zoo.

Chester is also close to other major out of town retailing complexes such as Cheshire Oaks, designer outlet village, based in Ellesmere Port. The Broughton Shopping Park, in Flintshire North Wales, features a variety of shops and restaurants. The city has unique character in its two-tiered gallery of shops called The Rows.
