Canfield is an attractive city located in Mahoning County, Ohio, United States. The city is in the Youngstown - Warren area and provides good travel and tourist attractions. If you are in search of beautiful and quite holiday spot, then Canfield will not disappoint you at all.
Canfield has a centuries old history full of good and hard times. It became Township in 1798, No. 1 in range No. 3 after the purchase from the Connecticut Land Company.
Although, it was purchased by six gentlemen; most of the land was owned by Judson Canfield. At that time, the township was called Campfield, however, on April 15, 1800 it was voted to be called Canfield, in honor of this man. Located on the southeastern border of the Connecticut Western Reserve Territory, Canfield was about to be a reputed city and a respected visiting city.
Most of the first settlers of Canfield came from Connecticut. Later, major immigrations by the Germans in 1805 and in 1852 by the Irish Catholics made the city popular in far-off areas. In 1801, the area's first business was opened in the northwestern part of the township. It was a sawmill. In the later part of 1800's, stagecoach service was established for mail and travelers.
Canfield remained the part of Trumbull County till 1846, when the counties in the area were redefined and Mahoning County emerged as a new county. Canfield planned to be the county seat and it was made such in 1846 because of it being the geographical center.
The Youngstown, on the other hand, grumbled that it should have had that honor. Thus began a debate that would last three decades until and unless bill for removal of the county seat from Canfield to Youngstown was voted upon by the legislature in Columbus in 1874.
It should also be noted that Canfield experienced a lot of growth during that era. During this crisis, Canfield was represented by General James A. Garfield who later became President of the United States.
Following its removal as county seat, things went wrong for Canfield. The hotel industry died off and Canfield lost contact with the rest of the county. However, it became the center of a farming community. However, the city re-appeared soon as a booming and cheering community that enjoy life and make others enjoy it by offering interesting options.
It is better to explore Canfield on your own. However, we give you a sneak peak of what you should visit and what to expect from this lovely town of Ohio. The primary architectural style of Canfield is like Classic Revival that has got a style and maturity of the Western Reserve region.
