Binghamton
A cool city to enjoy good times in life, Binghamton welcomes you all to explore its beautiful land and exciting fun opportunities. Known as The Parlor City, Binghamton is located in the Southern Tier of New York in the United States.
It is the seat of justice for Broome County and situated at the junction of the Susquehanna and the Chenango rivers that makes it greener and calmer. Besides this, the city is almost completely surrounded by high hills, which add greatly to the general attractiveness of the scene.
While it nit easily to track exact history of Binghamton, there are enough evidences to claim that this area was inhabited by Native Americans till the end of the American Revolution. It is also said that General James Clinton and his brigade of troops encamped two nights here while on their way to join General Sullivan.
Earlier part of Tioga County, this area was separated and included in the Broome County in 1806 that was named after Revolutionary War veteran and then Lieutenant-Governor John Broome.
The city of Binghamton itself was named in honor of William Bingham, a wealthy Philadelphia banker whose interest after the revolution was in this land. He envisioned a new village at the meeting of the Susquehanna and Chenango Rivers and hired local merchant Joshua Whitney who built this city in a well-mannered way.
George F. Johnson is also an important name in Binghamtons history. This local shoe manufacturer donated six beautiful carousels to local parks within Broome County that later earned Binghamton the title of The Carousel Capitol Of The World.
Binghamton always remain in the limelight for its business and industrial opportunities, though the city gone through many good and hard times. In 1834, the same year when it incorporated, work began on the Chenango Canal that connected Binghamton with Utica in the south and the Erie Canal in the north.
Due to this, the city benefited a lot as it brought the arrival of new settlers and merchandise, as well as provided means of shipping finished goods in and out of the area. When the Chenango Canal route was closed in 1874, there were some concerns over Binghamtons future.
However, soon it enjoyed the fruits of the Industrial Revolution with its booming cigar industry making it ranked only behind New York City as the top cigar-making city in US. Today, Binghamton stands proud as quality oriented city that boosts of good infrastructure and convenient lifestyle.
Despite its rich business history, Binghamton is recognized as city of people with thousands of immigrants and millions tourists appreciating it every year.
