Baytown is a city in Chambers and Harris Counties in the Gulf Coast region of the U.S. state of Texas. It is located within the Houston-Sugar Land-Baytown metropolitan area. The city lies along both State Highway 146 and Interstate 10. As of the 2000 U.S. Census, Baytown had a total population of 66,430 and it is the fourth-largest city within the metropolitan area.
Around 1822, first settlers in and around the current Baytown area appeared and among them was Nathaniel Lynch, who set up a ferry crossing which is still in operation today at the junction of the San Jacinto River and Buffalo Bayou. This location has become known as Lynchburg.
The settlers played an influential role in the battle for Texas Independence. East Baytown community was created in the early 1920's. Over time, the `East' part of `East Baytown' was dropped, due to the fact East Baytown was west of Goose Creek.
Oil exploration began in earnest and in 1916 the Goose Creek oil field became the first offshore drilling operation in Texas. The refinery produced over a billion gallons of aviation fuel during WWII, and nearly half of the total butyl rubber production in the United States in 1945.
Residents and visitors of the City of Baytown can take advantage of several city facilities for meetings, parties and other functions. These include everything from outdoor venues like Jo Roosa Pavilion, which accommodates 100 people, to the auditorium at the Baytown Community Center, which accommodates as many as 500 guests.
For even larger events, theres the Bicentennial Park Amphitheater. This exciting venue, which is the site of the citys annual Fourth of July celebration, is perfect for concerts and festivals.
The city also has two swimming pools and a spray park available for parties and other events. The pools can be reserved for a fee. The spray park is always open to the public, and the picnic shelters nearby are available only on a first-come, first-served basis.

Established in 1934 to provide high quality education at a minimal cost, Lee College has continued that tradition for over 60 years. Baytown Nature Center

In 1948, the Battleship TEXAS became the first battleship memorial museum in the U.S. That same year, on the anniversary of Texas Independence, the Texas was presented to the State of Texas and commissioned as the flagship of the Texas Navy. In 1983, the Texas was placed under the stewardship of the Texas Parks and Wildlife and is permanently anchored on the Buffalo Bayou and the busy Houston Ship Channel.
The Texas Parks and Wildlife's 1,200-acre San Jacinto Battleground State Historic Site consists of the Battleground, Monument and Battleship TEXAS. These sites are located within minutes of downtown Houston and a short distance to the beaches of Galveston Island.

Evergreen Point Golf Course
Evergreen Point is in an area steeped in Texas history. The golf club is located just minutes from the San Jacinto Battlefield where Sam Houston and his army defeated the Mexican Army to gain independence for Texas. In 1848, Dr. Ashbel Smith, Surgeon General of the Texas Army and friend of Sam Houston, became the owner of the thousand acre Evergreen Plantation. With the Purchase, he became the largest land owner in the vicinity.
San Jacinto Monument
The San Jacinto Battleground State Historic Site holds a significant responsibility to preserve the proud history of the State of Texas and the United States. The famous Battle of San Jacinto that brought TEXAS its independence was fought on this site.
Because of the great importance of the Battle to the course of history, the Battleground is of state, national and international significance, a fact that is attested to by the site's National Historic Landmark status.
Over the past decade, the City of Baytown has invested much effort into creating and revitalizing its local parks. The town boasts more than 40 parks, with a variety of amenities. Many of these parks are situated on or near Goose Creek.
