Anchorage was developed in the year of 1914, with the purpose of forming a railroad construction port for the Alaska Railroad. Ship Creek Landing was the place of the railroad headquarters, which had turned into a tent city, within no time.
The basic economy of the city in the 1920s was based on the railroad construction. Later, during the period of 1930s and the 1950s, the city had experienced a high level of expansion in the sectors like the air transportation and it was also greatly in use for the military purposes. Anchorage International Airport was opened in the year of 1951. Elmendorf Air Force Base and Fort Richardson were constructed in the 1940s.
The city of Anchorage had seen a great disaster on March 27, 1964, when the city was hit by the magnitude 9.2 Good Friday Earthquake, causing the deaths of 115 people and a total damage of $1.8 billion. Rebuilding process had started in the era of 1960s, keeping in mind the future warnings. Oil was discovered in Prudhoe Bay, in the year of 1968, and the resulting oil boom spurred further growth in Anchorage.
Anchorage had seen a merger with Eagle River, Girdwood, Glen Alps, and several other communities, in the year of 1975. The city was declared as the Municipality of Anchorage, after it. The city had been continuously in progress, during the whole era of 1980s.
There were many capital projects and a great campaign was launched, to beautify the whole city. Anchorage has been named as All-America City four times, in 1956, 1965, 1984/85, and 2002, by the National Civic League.

Anchorage has a very short for the growth of new plants, ranging for almost 100 days. Summers are really mild, but interestingly cool, in comparison to the contiguous US and even interior Alaska, causing the frequent rains.
