As an expert musician and outstanding pianist from China; Li Yundi has compelled the whole world to acknowledge his stuff and appreciate his genius. Though young in age, he holds great expertise on this craft and his achievements are plentiful.

Li Yundi is hailed from Chongqing in central China. As a child, he was so fascinated by music that once he refused to leave a shopping mall just because a man was playing accordion there. Soon, he started learning this instrument and won the top prize at the Chongqing Children's Accordion Competition. Later, he took piano lessons from one of China's renowned piano instructors, Dan Zhao Yi.

When Li Yundi turned twelve, he got admission at the famous music school of Sichuan, Sichuan Music Academy, through a tough selection process. Though the schools expanses were high, Li had smooth run there because he kept winning many scholarships and awards throughout his schooling.

For Li, awards and acclaim started pouring at a very early age. He won his first major award Beijing in 1994 in the Children's Piano Competition. A year later, he topped at the Stravinksy International Youth Competition. His talent was also recognized at the Missouri Southern International Piano Competition in 1998.

Li Yundi has also won honors at US Stravinsky Competition and Gina Bachauer Young Artists International Piano Competition. He stood third in the International Franz Liszt Piano Competition at Utrecht and also got great acclaim at China International Piano Competition.

Though Li Yundi developed some name in the Chinese music circles till 1999, what really established his stature as the classical pianist was his win at the Frederic Chopin Competition. Held in Warsaw, Poland in October 2000, the event put Li into the spotlight as he became the youngest winner of the event and also the sole Chinese player to ever win the award.

Like awards and competitions, Li Yundi has also found success with his recorded work. His recordings and recitals are considered collectors items for classical music lovers. His work of Liszt for Deutsche Grammophon was hailed by New York Times as the Best CD of the Year while many of his renowned live performances were also captured on tapes for repeat listening.

With his consecutive success, Li Yundi has now become a sought after name in live piano playing. His magic has reached United States too when he made his debut here in 2003. He performed at Carnegie Hall during Steinway and Sons' 150th Anniversary Gala. One month later, he performed in Chopin's Piano Concerto No.
